Dzongri Trek by Simon & Sheryll From New Zealand

We indeed had a hidden paradise adventure on the Dzongri track! It was an amazing experience, the like of which we had never experienced before, despite completing many treks in NZ.
What singled out this experience as one to remember, was the people who run and work in this local family business. Dawa has a great team who clearly like working for him. Sunil our guide was the skipper so to speak and he worked so well with the rest of the team, which included a fantastic cook, 2 porters, a “yakman” and of course the 3 Dzo’s (or Yaks). A little embarrassing actually considering all this was just for my wife and I.
We have never trekked at altitude before, so wondered how we would go. The weather was changeable but a lovely temperature in May. Each day we would setout after a substantial breakfast preceded by a cup of tea delivered to our tent. The walking was a good workout for us, but manageable and as we went higher, we just walked more slowly.
The scenery is awesome. We saw langur monkeys, many different birds, lush rain forest, but not that many people, which was great. The views at dawn from the lookout above the Dzongri campsite were stunning. We were lucky that day, as the prior day and the following day, it bucketed down. In fact on the final day walking down to Yuksom, the monsoon started in earnest and we had a 7 hour trek through newly formed rivers, mud, leeches and everything got drenched. This truly was an adventure.
We felt like we had achieved something memorable. A sense of accomplishment, all supported by Sunil and his wonderful team, who do this stuff for a living. I will never forget our cook who wore corderoy longs, shiny black boots and a modest jacket the whole way, with an umbrella in one hand and a tray of eggs in the other – magic! I also will never forget seeing locals walking in jandals/thongs or gold coloured gumboots at 4000 metres above sea level.
Thank you for an amazing trip Dawa. I also add that we were thrilled to support such a professional, caring and friendly local Yuksom family businessSimon and Sheryll
